Living Honorably in a Hostile World
Have you ever been caught in a situation where you were treated harshly and unfairly by those in authority over you?
In the first century Christians were being treated harshly and unfairly by the pagan authorities over them. They were caught in difficult situations where they were being slandered, ostracized, and abused by the Romans. In 1Peter, the Apostle Peter writes to these Christians who were suffering great injustice. The natural response would have been to become bitter, vindictive, and rebellious against those who were abusing their authority. But Peter tells them to ‘submit’ to those in authority over you. By holding on to the hope of the Gospel and submitting with Christlike submission they create windows for God to work in and through.
Then and now Peter tells us to look to and follow Jesus example when we suffer unjustly. Jesus submitted Himself to God while he was suffered unjustly. Jesus trusted that God would use His suffering to accomplish His good purposes. And God did. Through the unjust suffering of Jesus God redeemed us.
Following Jesus' example helps us transform difficult situations into opportunities for God's purpose to be fulfilled in and through us.
