STAND STRONG

Living with Hope in Troubled Times
A Study in First Peter

Living for the Will of God

On January 8, 1956, 28-year-old American missionary Jim Elliot was martyred, along with four others trying to bring the Gospel to a remote tribe in the Amazon. He was survived by his wife, Elisabeth, and their 10-month-old daughter Valerie. These men knew the dangers when they embarked on their quest. And right before he left, Jim wrote this famous quote in his journal, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

Jim and his companions were guided by the ‘eternal living hope of the Gospel’ and put everything on the line to share this hope with native people deep in the Amazon. But their quest ended with them being speared to death by the very people they were trying to reach.
The secular press called their deaths a foolish tragic waste. Even some Christians viewed their deaths as a tragic defeat. But in the Kingdom of God, it was victory—because their sacrifice ignited a wave of native peoples coming to faith in Jesus, including some of the very people who murdered them!
