From Tombs to Testimony:
A Story of Redemption & Responsibility
Are you familiar with the story of Helen Keller? She was born happy, healthy baby on June 27, 1890. But at just 19 months old, she was afflicted with scarlet fever. This disease permanently destroyed Helen’s ability to see and hear. Imagine her plight for a moment: she went from a world of hearing and seeing into a world of profound, silent darkness. For years, she lived as a wild, frustrated child, entombed in her own mind. For years her parents tried different teachers to reach her, but they all gave up on her.
But then, a young woman named Anne Sullivan entered Helen's dark and silent world. Anne was a disciplined, and deeply compassionate teacher who would not give up on Helen. The breakthrough came at the water pump. As Anne spelled the word 'w-a-t-e-r' into one of Helen’s hands while cool water gushed over the other, something clicked. Helen suddenly understood that the manual fingerspelling signified the water. Light flooded into her mind. That one connection unlocked a torrent of understanding, and a world of language and communication opened up to her. A life that seemed destined for an isolated tomb was suddenly set on a path to becoming one of the most influential voices for social reform in her day. Anne Sullivan was the key, the dedicated savior who, through patient effort, broke Helen free from the chains that bound her.
This incredible story of being set free from bondage resonates powerfully with the story we will this Sunday as we study Mark 5:1-20. We see a man in an even more terrifying form of bondage, and we witness the power and mercy of Jesus who sees the man’s terrible plight and sets him free.
