Are You Assured of Your Salvation?
In Ephesians 6 the Apostle Paul closes his letter by instructing believers to ‘put on the whole armor of God. He reminds us that we face an invisible but real spiritual enemy who is on a mission to stop us from growing in Christ. Paul uses the typical armor of Roman soldier to explain the spiritual armor believers have to counter every attack of the devil. When an ancient warrior suited up for battle, the last piece of armor he put on was his helmet. Without a helmet a soldier’s brain could become incapacitated and the rest of his armor would be useless.
In Ephesians 6:17 Paul instructs us to ‘take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God’. This spiritual helmet is the believer’s ‘assurance of salvation’. When a believer is Biblically grounded on what it means to be ‘saved’ they gain an impenetrable defense against anything the devil throws at them. A believer who is not assured of their salvation will be vulnerable to being overcome by doubt and will eventually stop growing.
Do you know what it means to be ‘saved’?
Biblically our salvation is not limited to a one-time act. It is an ongoing, eternal state of God’s grace that believers can rest in and enjoy here and now. Assurance of salvation gives us the confidence to say, “I am saved, I am being saved, and one day I will be completely saved.” Assurance of salvation does NOT give us the freedom to sin, rather it gives us the motivation to follow Jesus out of love and gratitude for what He did for us.
